September 17, 2008 – This past weekend CF Racing with driver Cory Cacciavillani travelled to Downsview Park for the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship series finale. The team arrived at the central Toronto location on Thursday to prepare for battle in three classes.
Kicking off the day on Saturday, Cory qualified fourth in Junior Medium just over a tenth off the pole position. The pre-final started off with a bang that pushed Cory backwards early. Keeping his head up and focused, Cory drove back to finish the heat in fifth. A penalty to a driver ahead moved Cory up to row two for the final. The start of the final was just as exciting as the pre-final but again Cory found himself deep in the field. Battling from as far back as eighth, he picked off kart by kart until lap sixteen when he took the lead. Battling up front with Artem Korolev, Scott Nagel and Michael Taibi, Cory led entering the final lap. Trying his best to hold off a charge from Korolev, Cory was passed entering corner five. Holding his own Cory managed to only let two by and he crossed the finish line in third.
The result in Rotax Junior was a complete different story as the team again struggled all day with engine issues. Qualifying fifteenth, Cory managed to hold on during the pre-final but lost a position and started the final in sixteenth. More engine woes in the final, Cory only made it to lap five before pulling off and ending his race early.
Rain welcomed the drivers to the track on Sunday morning. A wet practice session set the drivers up for qualifying. Opting for rain tires on a drying track, the team made the right decision and posted a time worthy of fifth place on the charts. Cory had a great start in the pre-final and found himself in second at the end of lap two. Sitting in second behind Zac Mahoney, Cory waited until the last lap to make his pass for the lead. Executing it perfectly, Cory grabbed the lead and the pre-final win. Starting from the pole, Cory jumped to the early lead and led the first five laps. Dicing it out with Mahoney, Korolev and Michael Adams, the four swapped positions throughout the entire race. Putting himself in second on lap nineteen, Cory was everywhere from first to fourth throughout the lap. Exiting the final corner in third, contact between the front two allowed Cory to pull aside the two and drag race to the finish line. Awaiting the outcome, the team erupted in celebration with the official news that Cory had crossed 0.019 seconds ahead of Korolev, thereby claiming his first Regional victory.
The win was a great way to cap off a weekend of mixed results. The team now heads home to Leamington in search of another club championship. Cory would like to thank all his supporters who came to Downsview to watch and cheer him on as well as his sponsors, CF Groups, Remp Racing, The Pritchard Group, JD Racing, Paramount Power Systems, Point Pelee Karting and T.J. Hill.
