This year CF and its driver Cory Cacciavillani would enter two classes; the headline TAG Sr. with $5000 up for the winner and the IAME Leopard Sr. class.

This would be Cacciavillani s debut on a Leopard and he showed no signs of struggle getting used to the package running with times at the front during Saturdays two practice sessions. On Saturday it was apparent that last year s steep learning curve at the Rock paid off with Cacciavillani near the top of the time charts out of the box in TAG Sr.

With only two practice sessions on Saturday morning the team was confident they had the speed to run at the front and were prepared for qualifying. Unfortunately nature would not co-operate and heavy rains moved in Saturday afternoon prior to qualifying.

The first class out for qualifying was TAG Sr. which was split into three groups. The first group of TAG Sr. were out in wet conditions with a slight drizzle. Unfortunately for Cacciavillani, seconds to his group two departing the grid a heavy downpour began which would last through the entirety of the second groups qualifying sessions. Although Cacciavillani was fast relative to his group, the entire group struggled due to the random downpour which saw most of them line up in the second half of the 33 kart field. Cacciavillani managed a respectable 16th qualifying position despite the terrible conditions.

In the chaos of the day with, delays, changing schedules and random heavy downpours of rain Cacciavillani s CF Racing package was late to the grid for Leopard qualifying, the problem was compounded with a transponder issuing delay. Unfortunately for Cacciavillani his out lap was his qualifying lap, as the checkered flew the same lap he entered the track. Despite only one lap he managed to navigate the to an 11th place position in the 21 kart field.

Race day Sunday would bring cooler temperatures and ideal racing conditions. Both morning warm ups re-enforced Cacciavillani s speed from dry practice sessions, 4th on the time charts in TAG Sr. only a few tenths back and 1st on the time charts in IAME Leopard Sr.

With no pre finals at the Rock Island Grand Prix it was straight to the main event. Cacciavillani and his Kosmic chassis powered by a CF Tuned Vortex ROK would start TAG Sr. in a dismal 16th position. With any street course starting 16th in a field of 33 is not ideal; a struggle to just make it through the first few laps. Unfortunately Cacciavillani was involved in an opening lap incident where a kart launched over him. This put him to the back of the field and he managed to battle back into the top 15 running times comparable to the leaders, even with a few bent steering components. Unfortunately as a result of the opening lap incident the exhaust system suffered damage and eventually the damaged part gave way giving Cacciavillani a DNF.

IAME Leopard Sr. would give Cacciavillani a shot at a podium. A rocket start put Cacciavillani and his Kosmic chassis powered by CF Tuned IAME Leopard into the 7th position after the opening lap. In the first half of the race Cacciavillani showed his speed as the fastest kart on the track. He managed to reel in the lead pack where he slowly picked off positions putting him into the top 5. Late in the race as Cacciavillani battled with the lead pack hopes of victory were dashed by an incident with a back marker which set him the 5th position with an insurmountable gap between him and the leaders with 2 laps left. Cacciavillani would bring home a 5th place finish which would turn into a 4th place finish after disqualification of the winner in post race tech.

Heading into the race the entire CF Racing Team knew that qualifying was important, unfortunately things did not turn out the way we planned and we hope to better ourselves when we return to the Grand Prix next year" CF Racing driver Cory Cacciavillani

It was a good weekend overall even though our finishing results were disappointing. Cory was fast enough to run at the front in all classes but at an event like Rock Island there is no margin for error, qualifying is crucial and unfortunately mother nature got the best of us this time and it set us back enough for the final to prevent us from a podium finish. Position 1 Fitness CEO and tuner Adam Zaremba.

With disappointing results but the speed to win it is certain CF Racing will be back at the Rock in 2012. Next up CF Racing and driver Cory Cacciavillani look to secure a seat to the Rotax World Finals, via the Pan American Challenge championship event at New Castle Motorsports Park, September 22-25.

Cacciavillani is supported in his karting efforts by CF Groups, G Force Engines, EngCap Management, Position 1 Fitness, J3 Competition, Paramount Power Systems, Remp Racing and The Pritchard Group (TPG).
